CalCOFI is the longest-running ocean and living marine resource observation program in the US and provides data to assess and manage major fisheries off the coast of California (sardine, anchovy, rockfish, among others). Each season, CalCOFI surveys California’s marine environment living resources (from microbes to whales), and monitors indicators of ocean and environmental change.

The CalCOFI Director plays an essential role as the lead Principal Investigator and is the point of contact for the program. This position will be tasked with a wide range of responsibilities which includes oversight and implementation of the program as well as annual grant writing and reporting. The Director also collaborates with the broader academic and management community on the design or revision of CalCOFI’s monitoring strategies to ensure that the program stays at the forefront of scientific research and environmental management.

In addition to these tasks, the Director will contribute intellectually to both scientific and management publications to help advance knowledge in the field. The role also includes networking and promoting the program, not just within the region but also on a national and international scale.

The Director is responsible for articulating the long-term vision and goals of CalCOFI, providing clear direction for its future. They will need to manage the ongoing operations of the program, which will include overseeing a large research and operational budget to ensure that the goals are met. The Director will need to use highly specialized expertise in research-specific concepts and objectives.

The Director will also need to facilitate national and international conferences or seminars annually. These events will provide the scientific community with the latest developments in the program and related areas.

This comprehensive position requires a deep commitment to the program’s success and a proactive approach to leadership and innovation.
