Barth et al., 2020. “Seasonal and interannual variability of phytoplankton abundance and community composition on the Central Coast of California.”

A new study published in Marine Ecology Progress Series by Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System research scientist at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) provides the first seasonal and interannual characterization of San Luis Obispo Bay’s phytoplankton community. The long-term datasets presented were collected as part of U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System; specifically, CeNCOOS and Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System.

Overall, the seasonality of phytoplankton in SLO Bay mirrored that of the larger California Current System; diatoms dominated the community during the spring upwelling season, whereas dinoflagellates dominated the community during the fall relaxation period.
