The Pathogen Forecast Model is a collaboration between SCCOOS and Scripps Institution of Oceanography that allows users to view five-day forecasts of sewage concentrations and risk of swimmer illness. This helps our community make informed decisions to keep themselves and their families safe at the beach

The model responds to a longstanding problem of raw sewage from Mexico circulating in the coastal ocean on both sides of the border. Using pollution transport experiments and environmental data, the model predicts sewage movement and concentration along the coast. Funding from the state of California supported the development of this tool to protect public health while officials seek ways to address the causes of the sewage problem.
